Epilogue

The phoenix emerged with smoking wingtips from the scorched cave. Black grass crunched underfoot.

The evening was fine and clear, and the great bird known to the humans as ‘Jacob’ felt as though a thousand years of increasing burden had lifted from his shoulders, burned away in a raging inferno. Now he felt invigorated.

This region of the world had been cleansed. The terrible, awful pressure had dissipated and the phoenix felt light and agile, ready for another millennium. He flexed his tingling wings and gazed with awe at the vibrant rainbow of colors across his chest.

Over the centuries, a phoenix forgot just how miraculous and wonderful a regeneration was, not only for the land but for itself. It had no sense of its original birth, yet recalled the last few rebirths over thousands of years. Rebirths were rare enough to instill trepidation in a phoenix, even fear, because it knew that its immortality might one day bow to Mother Nature. He launched into the sky, leaving behind a mountaintop of ash. The air felt good—light and balanced, no longer charged with the thick, putrid smell of magic. Even the ground, far below, had faded. At night, Jacob had grown to hate the pockets of energy pulsating below the earth, spilling into the atmosphere, poisoning life and mutating all manner of species. Now the earth’s crust was cold and silent, as it should be, its energy spent. His realm had been purified.

For now, anyway.

Unfortunately, magic had a tendency to seep back into the world no matter how well cleansed it was . . .
